Nexus

For Wind Ensemble

Nexus tells the story of a young protagonist who leads soldiers in a galaxy-wide conflict. This piece centers on the developing relationships between commander and soldier, and the emotional turmoil wartime experiences can bring—the joy of camaraderie with fellow soldiers, the sobering realities of victory, and the nerve-racking panic of dealing with a combat mission gone sideways. The story culminates in movement 5 where the protagonist is betrayed and pursued by her soldiers, and the trauma she deals with after escaping.

Throughout the entire story, the protagonist is at the nexus, or center, of galaxy-wide events. In some cases she is an active participant in moving events forward; in others, she is merely a spectator and must cope with the consequences of events outside of her control. In many ways this reflects life—sometimes we are able to exert a large amount of control over our circumstances, and other times we must do the best we can with events outside of our control.
